Unnamed Tabloid 1.1

Yes, it’s true. The theme has been updated. Mainly I cleaned up the single post stuff – took out the “related posts” table and the social bookmark table at the bottom. I found I didn’t need it anymore once I installed this handy plugin and selected the option to show the facebook, twitter and email links at the bottom of each post (basically, just the single articles, not pages). You’ll see the plugin in action at the bottom of posts on this very site also. Look down. See?

You can download version 1.1 of the theme here.

Um, I meant to say, “Unnamed Tabloid 1.02.”

So, yeah, a funny thing happened as I was converting my other site (The National Protrusion.com) to the latest version of the theme — the “More News” section at the bottom of the front page was all f’d up.

For some reason, the category links at the top of each list of three articles was linking to the incorrect category. I think I had something amiss with “the loop.” (Doesn’t everyone, though?)

Anyway, it’s fixed now, and you can download the newest, latest version, Version 1.02, right here.

Okay, so I fixed a bunch of problems and have resubmitted to WordPress. We’ll see what happens. But, obviously, you don’t need to have WordPress approve the theme in order to use it. As such, I’d like to point out one major improvement in this version of the theme.

You might remember a short time ago I wrote about the fact that you had to have Yet Another Related Posts Plugin installed in order for this theme to function correctly, at least as far as single posts went. Well, that’s no longer true.

How to Use the Unnamed Tabloid theme Options Panel, Part 1

One of the cool things about the Unnamed Tabloid theme, if I do say so myself, is the fact that it has an options panel with many choices for customizing the theme and how it functions. (I know other themes have these kinds of options, but mine is free and much cooler.)

Firstly, you can choose which articles are displayed on the front page, and in what order. You can also choose an image to be featured on the front page.

This is what the front page looks like (or at least the top half of it – would that be “above-the-fold” in newspaper-speak?):

You’ll see the primary featured article in the left column, and above it the featured image. It would probably make sense to have the featured image be related to the primary featured article, but I leave that up to you.

The Unnamed Tabloid theme

Unnamed Tabloid theme - front page

I’m announcing the release of The Unnamed Tabloid theme, my first full-fledged WordPress theme. You can download it here. I have submitted it to WordPress’s theme directory, and if it gets accepted, I will post the link to that page as the main download page.

There is a live demo of the theme available here, with sample posts and whatnot. Also, my satirical news website, The National Protrusion.com, currently uses the theme. So you can see it in use there as well. Continue reading
